If you’re in the market for a mid-engined sports car but can’t wait for Chevrolet to come out with the C8 Corvette in early 2020, your best choice for the time being would be the Porsche 718 series. But what if you’re looking for something different, something with a little more pedigree?
Enter the A110 from Alpine, a two-door berlinetta which can trace its roots back to the Monte Carlo Rally-winning A110 from the 1960s and 1970s. Manufactured in Dieppe by specialized robots and craftsmen alike, the French interloper is a lightweight thriller in the corner with a rather minimalist interior. As such, Carlex Design decided to make the cabin a bit more special.

The blue-painted A110 in the photo gallery received white leather upholstery and blue floor mats from the Polish tuner, and the white-blue contrast works wonders with the stitching. Even with these modifications, the cabin of the Alpine plays second fiddle to that of the heavier Porsche 718 series.

So far, the lightest and most driving-focused A110 is the A110S that develops 292 PS and tips the scales at 1,114 kilograms. The low-volume sports car doesn’t come cheap either. The A110S, for example, retails at €66,500 including VAT. That’s extremely close to the 718 Boxster S, but looking at the bigger picture, it’s the Alpine that promises the most thrills in the twisties.

James May bought one following a test drive, and moving forward, the British presenter intends to purchase a Tesla Model 3 electric sedan. As far as sales are concerned, the 718 series remains the more popular alternative for most buyers in Europe and pretty much everywhere else in the world.

Having mentioned the C8 Corvette in the first paragraph of the story, it should be mentioned that Chevrolet intends to sell the mid-engine ‘Vette for under $60,000 in the United States of America. That’s 718 Boxster money if you were wondering, and as opposed to the C7, the C8 will also be available through official channels in the Old Continent, UK, Australia, and even China.
