Most grounded airliners end up teared apart for scrap metal and other salvageable tech from onboard. Others will slowly rot in an airplane cemetery but some get to serve some noble causes. Like becoming a hotel, as it happened with this KLM jetliner.
KLM (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij or the Royal Dutch Airlines) managed to create probably the best hotel suite for aircraft enthusiasts out of an old McDonnell Douglas MD-11.

After 3,675 successful flights, the now-grounded DC-11 will shield up to for guests who want to sleep in a plane but hate turbulences and Economy class. Stepping through that door guarded by a welcoming mat and two plants, you’ll see that the case here is quite the opposite.

Huge classy interior

You won’t find rows of seats inside, but a huge 366 sqm (3,940 sq-ft) apartment with a big open living, kitchen, two bedrooms and no less than 8 bathrooms, two for each of the four “passengers” and a panoramic cockpit.

The furniture and all accessories have been carefully chosen to give you that 60’s aroma. Don’t worry though, because you still get a fully functional kitchen, wireless internet connectivity, TV, heating, air conditioning and everything you need to live and feel good.

You can start reading one of the many books and magazines scattered around while watching real planes take off and land in the “backyard” or you can watch a movie from the all time classics like Snakes on a Plane, The Aviator or Top Gun.

You can win a night on the plane

Yep, the plane is listed on Airbnb and you can enter the competition to win a night on the plane at the end of this month. You can submit your entry until November 20th and get to spend some quality time in the DC-11 on 28, 29 or 30.

The plane is located right beside the runway of Amsterdam’s bustling Schiphol airport and if you win, KLM will also take care of your trip there.

Oh, forgot about the rules of the “house”:
  • No flying
  • Don’t use the inflatable emergency slide
  • Smoking is not allowed when the non-smoking sign is on
  • No marshmallow roasting with the jet engines
  • Water the plants and feed the fish
  • Alcohol consumption is not allowed
  • Treat the plane like it’s yours
