Produced as a single generation from 2003 to 2009, the Cadillac XLR was a classic premium roadster with a massive Northstar V8 up front, rear-wheel drive, and a retractable hardtop. Notable for a few quirks, such as the Bulgari-designed instrumentation, the XLR was also the unforeseen platform sibling to the C6 generation of “America’s sports car” – the Chevrolet Corvette.
Once Cadillac’s flagship model, the XLR not only shared GM’s modern iteration of the Y platform with the Chevy Corvette, but was even produced alongside the sports car at the GM Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky.
This 2006 example that’s currently up for grabs on Bring A Trailer has been acquired new by the sole owner – and current seller – back in late 2006 and has only covered 17,135 miles (27,576 km) since.
Because of its serious Black Raven/Ebony leather/wood trim combination, this XLR is probably not for the one looking to stand out in a crowd, even though connoisseurs might still take notice of the spectacular Cadillac design. For us, the little ducktail-like spoiler that also incorporates the third brake light and the ‘Vette-matching mid-mounted quad exhaust would certainly settle the bill.
Not to mention that under the hood resides a 4.6-liter Northstar mill – once considered GM’s most technologically complex engine – which should still be good for its advertised 320 hp and 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) even to this day. It’s paired to a classic five-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential, so the XLR is up to anything – be it cruising or canyon carving.
Being a Cadillac, there’s no shortage of equipment, including the powered retractable hardtop, a head-up display system, Magnetic Ride Control suspension, 18-inch alloys, or a Bose-supplied premium sound system. Better yet, the cabin also includes a pair of leather-appointed heated and cooled Ebony seats.
