Carabante Becomes Owner of Campos Grand Prix

What has been rumored for quite some time now was finally confirmed on Friday afternoon, when former shareholder of Campos Grand Prix, Spanish businessman Jose Ramon Carabante, purchased the majority stake in the team and became the new owner of Campos.

After some prolonged talks with former team boss Adrian Campos, Carabante managed to convince him to sell the necessary shares in the team in order to make him majority owner and his first move afterwards was to appoint Colin Kolles as new team principal of the team – who’ll take over from the same Adrian Campos.

“I would like to thank Bernie Ecclestone, who worked tremendously to support our efforts to keep the team viable. The whole rescue operation has been a race against time with the goal of always having the team run two competitive cars at the first Grand Prix of the F1 season in Bahrain. We have a lot of hard work still ahead of us but we are excited about making our F1 debut and looking forward to a competitive season,” said Carabante.

Kolles, who had previously been team principal for F1 teams like Midland, Spyker or Force India, insisted that the team is yet to be totally saved, as further investments are needed in order for Campos to make it to the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Meaning the new management shake-up was only the first of many steps Campos will have to take in order to debut in F1.

I could not resist this tremendous challenge and am very excited to join forces in this new team. Over the next ten days we will review the entire operation, find the extra funding to ensure the team will make the first race in Bahrain, announce the line-up for 2010 in due time and make the operation viable under Jose Ramon Carabante's new ownership,” said Kolles.

Although some reports suggested that Campos will stay at his former team as an advisor, the more likely prospect is that he’ll leave the Spanish outfit immediately. Also, it has emerged that Bruno Senna will indeed stay at Campos, while a second driver (probably Argentine government-backed Jose Maria Lopez) will be appointed in due time.
