Mercedes announced it had struck a deal with Whole Foods Market Lamar in Austin, Texas, which would allow it to deploy a fleet of car2go vehicles to be used by the shoppers coming out of the store packed with goods.
“Whole Foods Market maintains a strong commitment to a sustainable future and we believe this partnership will reinforce that commitment,” said Nicholas Cole, car2go CEO. “car2go is honored to be associated with Whole Foods Market as they continue to provide environmentally sustainable alternatives for their shoppers and employees.”
As you already know, car2go, the car sharing service operated by the German manufacturer, was launched in November 2009. Since then, it has managed to attract some 15,000 customers, a number which is, for all intents and purposes, much lower than those of rival Zipcar, an independent-run car sharing service.
Having the cars deployed right outside the doors of the store in Austin (one of the first locations chosen by car2go when it was launched in 2009) will help the car maker establishe a more comprehensive base for customers. Especially because driving off in a car sharing vehicle doesn't require all the pain and troubles of usual car renting.
