It turns out there are more car thieves out there with a conscience. A few days after one of them made news for returning the car he stole with a handwritten note of apology, another made sure to apologize to the driver before speeding off in his vehicle.
This one didn’t get far, though. Plus, he also crashed the car, so whatever points he gets for apologizing beforehand he loses for being a terrible driver. And an irresponsible one, too, because dude was drunk.
According to the Madison Police Chief Mike Koval’s blog, this happened near downtown Madison, Wisconsin, at noon on Sunday. The car in question belonged to a delivery service and the driver was nearby, returning from making a delivery, when he noticed the suspect lingering around it. That didn’t discourage him from taking it, however.
“He observed [the suspect] at the driver's side of his car,” the report notes. “The victim yelled at the male to get away from the car and the male responded with ‘Sorry’ and then took the car.”
“As officers were out with the victim, the victim was tracking the car and reported it being in Monona. The information was relayed to Monona PD who found the car crashed on Broadway. Shortly after it was aired, the driver/suspect (41-year-old AAM) was arrested for OWI and Monona took the crash investigation,” the report adds.
In addition to the driving under the influence charge, the man was also charged with operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. The investigation is still ongoing. The report doesn’t mention why the suspect crashed the car, but a safe bet would be his drinking might have played a part in it. It seems that no one was injured in the accident, or else the police would have mentioned it.
