Car Shaped Like a Pack of Cigs Comes Back into the Spotlight

For more than a century, we’ve gotten used to a certain shape of the car. Dictated by the necessities of aerodynamics or pure aesthetics, car bodies has been shaped throughout the years generally the same way, and we all know what to expect from this industry. But what if the next car will not meet our expectations?
Since June 2019 and through March 2020, the Petersen Museum is hosting an exhibition called Disruptors, showing the work of designers like Rem Koolhaas and Joey Ruiter. The exhibit is about “a minimalist approach to the look of conventional objects,” an approach that is supposed to “strip all expectation of conformity.” The line of such an object includes everything from footwear to cars and motorcycles.

One of the most intriguing concepts in this collection is a vehicle called Consumer. Shaped like a pack of cigarettes, the Consumer was first shown about three years ago as the incarnation of minimalist design when it comes to vehicles.

With no concern about aerodynamics or looks, Ruiter came up with a functional machine, fitted with only four wheels, an engine and a steering wheel, but shaped like a box.

The build would have been totally not impressive if it weren’t for the huge two-way mirror fitted at the front. When the LEDs behind it are off, the mirror reflects whatever it is in front of the car, but when they’re on, it makes the vehicle look like an illuminated bathroom mirror.

Ruiter, the man behind this design, is no stranger to weirdly-shaped builds. His website shows things like a symmetrical bicycle, a machine for off-roading on water (that’s right), and a motorcycle that looks like a Zippo.

And that’s the tip of the iceberg, as the designer has projects related to boats and skateboards as well. Mostly though, he is in the business of designing products for “big American furniture companies. “
