Cybersecurity is not something new in a general sense of the term. It has been around (or lacking) for decades now, as the internet started to spread and make a bigger impact on the world. However, cybersecurity related to cars is a rather new thing.
The interesting attempt of two security analysts to control a Jeep using a remote laptop, and their success in doing so a while back, sparked some heated discussions around the world. People started worrying that their Internet-connected cars could be targeted, and soon answers were demanded.
Well, unfortunately, the risk is there but the truth of the matter is, chances to have your car hijacked this way are very slim. As a matter of fact, a research paper from Frost & Sullivan recently showed that hackers are not exactly stimulated to take over your car. The monetary gains would be too little, no matter how much data the vehicle stores about you. Basically, at the moment, all this info isn’t of much use.
Even so, it’s better to act now as a precaution than later, trying to catch up. That’s why automakers will form a new alliance to work and share valuable info on car hacking.
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of Global Automakers will establish an Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) by the end of the year. The aim of this new authority is to facilitate sharing of best practices in dealing with such sensitive issues. Furthermore, it will gather intelligence on how cybersecurity evolves in the car-making industry, making sure to stay atop new challenges.
Every major automaker will be a part of this initiative and suppliers are expected to join in the effort later on. The best part is that everyone will get to make its contribution anonymously within ISAC.
