Can’t Engage Reverse Gear? Here’s an Ingenious Short Term Solution

Gear grinding noise and the shifter not getting into the “Reverse” position? Yep, you lost that gear and until you fix the gearbox the only way to back up your car is by pushing it. Regret buying that old SUV now?

On a manual transmission vehicle the one thing in the gearbox that makes it go backwards is an extra cog in-between the standard pair called the idler gear. It’s only role there is to reverse the spinning direction of the output shaft, but damaged teeth, a selector fork or a broken dog gear will prevent it do that.

It happens sometimes and it did recently to this guy’s Nissan Pathfinder. Still, that’s a big car and the man managed to find a more ingenious solution to make it drive the other way.

And all you need is some stuff already laying around in the garage, like some chains, PVC pipes, some nuts, S-hooks and some threaded rods. The result is some sort of rollers you put under the wheels to create the effect of an idler gear.

Even though the car will be in first gear, the rollers under the driving wheels will basically reverse the direction of spinning and thus make the car go backwards. It’s not that efficient for cornering but at least you can pull it out from the garage.

Just check it below and don’t forget to watch the tutorial video at the bottom.
