Canada to Make F1 Return in 2010?

Canada has a great chance to making a Formula One return from as early as next season, as suggested by several media reports in the North American country. According to the former promoter of the popular Montreal race Normand Legault, talks about restoring the Formula One event have been ongoing ever since Bernie Ecclestone first announced the drop of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve from the F1 calendar.

Legault confirmed that Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay has held plenty of talks with the 68-year old Englishman during the past few months, in order to find a solution for the revival of the Canadian race.

With American outfit USF1 part of the Formula One picture for 2010, it now seems likely for the FOM to take a better look at the North American continent for a future grand prix. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve seems to be in pole position, mainly due to its historical statute inside the sport.

Also, it seems Ecclestone's dream of having the Canadian government involved in the hosting of the Montreal race is close to coming true. It emerged that, if the grand prix were to be restored, the government would pour no less than $10 million for the organization of the event for at least 5 years.

Talking to national news agency CP, Legault evaluated the chances of Montreal making the F1 calendar in 2010 as “good”.

Also, taking the example of soon-to-be-departed Silverstone, the Montreal officials also expressed their willingness to become the host of a potential breakaway series formed by the F1 manufacturers. However, the rival series is unlikely to happen, given the latest letter exchange between the FIA and the FOTA in recent days.
