Can-Am Spyder Recalled Due To Transmission Issues

The Can-Am Spyder is a true hero and, as we know, some heroes have certain unsolved issues. To be more specific, the Cam-Am Spyder has an Achilles’ heel, in the form of a transmission issue that can cause the engine to stall.Bombardier Recreational Products, the company that produces the vehicle, will recall certain 2010 model year Spyder RS SE5 2nd series and RT SE5 Spyders, which are equipped with the optional SE5 semi-automatic transmission.

The transmission can cause the vehicle’s powerplant to stall when coming to as stop, due to the fact that the clutch may remain engaged. Should this happen, it may be extremely difficult or even impossible to re-start the engine.

The situation would leave the rider with a vehicle that has a locked rear wheel, and therefore can’t be pushed off the road, therefore being exposed to the risk of a crash with other vehicles.

Bombardier announced that it will notify owners and will issue a recall safety campaign that will see its dealers repair the vehicles free of charge. However, the vehicle maker has not offered a notification plan to the U.S.’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If you own a 2010 model year Spyder RS or RT equipped with the optional semi-automatic gearbox, you can contact Bombardier at 1-888-638-5397. You can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or visit the Admisitration’s website by following this link.
