We’ve already seen the shape of the car some time ago, and Chevrolet had originally stated it would produce an estimated 550 horsepower, but chief engineer Al Oppenheiser stated that it will make more power than was previously expected. The announcement was made during the official Canada unveil of the 2012 Camaro ZL1 at the Camaro Homecoming, held next to the Oshawa Assembly Plant, where the regular pony car is produced.
According to the official, the model will make more power than the Cadillac CTS-V and production will start in the first quarter of next year, as Camaro5 reports.
In other ZL1-related news, the car will have an optional automatic transmission and the Corvette ZR1’s Performance Traction Management system, which should make it deliver more consistent lap times, while also being faster on the road. It sounds like a serious contender for the Boss 302 is coming, but we can’t say for sure until the price tag is officially revealed as well.
"Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "It's the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we've chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history."
The ZL1 name is derived from the all-aluminum racing engine of the same name, which was developed in the late 1960s and installed into a handful of regular-production 1969 Camaros. Only 69 were ever built, so the 2012 might also be a rare beast.
The car will include the same content as the current 2SS package and include the following new or unique features:
- Six-way power driver and passenger seats
- Unique instrument panel and door panel inserts; and ZL1-logo sill plates
- Steering wheel audio controls with Bluetooth capability
- Wireless PDIM and USB-port
- Boston Acoustics premium audio system
- Rear parking assist
- Rear camera system (displayed in the inside rearview mirror).
