Cali to Become EV Capital of the World

Always at the forefront of green initiatives, California proves once again that it plans to be a force to be reckoned with in the bright future ahead by announcing a new endeavor meant to put it at the top of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles friendly states list.

The state plans to have on the road no less than one million such vehicles by 2020 and, as a means to support and accelerate the adoption of green vehicles, outlined today the so called "Taking Charge: Establishing California Leadership in the Plug-In Electric Vehicle Marketplace" plan. A long, fancy name for a very simple goal: reduce emissions, oil dependence, pollution.

The plan will serve as a roadmap for the adoption of PHEVs and EVs and calls for several organizations and companies to come together and work as one towards the common goal. Those organizations include GM, the California Energy Commission, Toyota, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and many others, united under the California Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative name.

“It's a bright, clean new world when automakers, electric utilities, infrastructure providers, regulators, public health organizations and others join hands to support a new transportation plan for California," said Diane Wittenberg, California Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative chairman.

"We're determined to pave the way for healthier, cleaner and cheaper transportation options for the 21st century."

The main goals of the project are the following:

  • simplify home charging stations installment process
  • develop solutions to enable charging at apartments and condos
  • structure electricity prices to encourage off-peak charging
  • increase consumer demand through education and awareness programs
  • develop new service industries to make charging a car easier than fueling at a gas station
  • encourage tech-based solutions to help drivers find existing public charging stations
  • ensure local governments help establish the strategic placement of a public charging network
