Cadillac seems to have abandoned all plans regarding a flagship sedan to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the focus has now turned to SUVs and crossovers.

The premium brand owned by General Motors is reportedly considering launching a new SUV, along with other products to enrich its portfolio. One of these products is a small sedan, which could fit in the compact segment and rival the likes of Audi A3 Sedan, as well as the Mercedes-Benz CLA.

However, our focus is on the alleged Cadillac XT7, which is supposed to become the big brother of the XT5. You already know the XT5, but the XT7 is claimed to be placed in the range just between the XT5 and the Escalade. While the latter will remain the biggest model in the range, the upcoming XT7 will have a different approach.

The next SUV from Cadillac is expected to be deployed as a BMW X7 competitor, which means that it could come to market in 2019 or 2020. By that time, Chevrolet will have launched the all-new Chevrolet Traverse, which will become the platform donor for the future XT7. Just like the next Traverse, the Cadillac XT7 is set to become a full-size SUV, which will be available with all-wheel-drive.

Cadillac’s shift in strategy, marked by a bigger focus towards crossovers and SUVs, comes after the brand has invested heavily in sedans, but without sales results to match its expectations. The CT6 is expected to stay the largest limousine in Cadillac’s range with the company’s new strategy.

SUVs and crossovers are doing great in most markets, and this segment be just what the doctor ordered for Cadillac, especially since the brand has access to suitable platforms from General Motors. The rumored Cadillac XT7 would make the automaker more competitive with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Audi Q7, and the BMW X7.
