Cadillac to Introduce a New V8 Engine on the CT6

In this rush for lower emissions and fuel saving, we all thought Cadillac was set to abandon the traditional V8 engine. But great news comes from the American automaker, as its CEO Johan de Nysschen has just revealed a V8 is coming for the CT6 range.

The new power unit is not based on GM’s small-block design and it doesn’t have anything in common with the current supercharged 6.2-liter in the CTS-V. It will be a freshly developed engine, most likely twin-turbocharged and with a displacement of 4.2 liters.

As China is a crucial market for any carmaker, Caddy’s rivals, such as Mercedes-Benz and Audi, went for a displacement under 4.0 liters to continue selling their cars on this market. But, in a very bold move, the American automaker says no! They are sticking with this displacement because the demand for V8 engines in China is so low that it doesn’t affect Cadillac sales too much.

Johan de Nysschen also says that the new V8 will develop power somewhere “in the upper 400s,” but it’s not focusing on sportiness. Therefore, the model packing the eight-cylinder engine won’t be a V-series car, as Car and Driver reports.

CT6’s customers currently have three options when talking about engines. The all-new 3.0-liter Twin Turbo V6 engine develops 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft (542 Nm) of torque, and for improved efficiency, it features cylinder deactivation technology and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It's available exclusively in all-wheel-drive spec.

The second engine is a 3.6-liter, naturally aspirated V6 and comes with 335 horsepower and 285 lb-ft (386 Nm) of torque.

Finally, a 2.0 inline-four power unit is slightly less powerful than the other two, producing 272 horsepower and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.

When officially revealed last year, the CT6 marked the automaker’s long-awaited return to the global prestige luxury segment. For the North American market, production began at the end of 2015 at the Detroit-Hamstrack assembly plant. Chinese-market models are expected to be assembled at a new facility in China, in early 2016.

The CT6 is also offered in Europe, Korea, Japan, Israel and the Middle East, and the production for these markets begins at the facility in Detroit in early 2016.
