Cadillac's Super Cruise System Explained

Cadillac’s new Super Cruise system is designed only for highway use, to ‘ease the driver’s workload.’ It is an upgrade to the already familiar adaptive cruise control, which is already in use by many other manufacturers. It is, however, a more advanced system than all the others currently in use, using cameras which communicates with the car’s GPS to keep it going straight and not hitting any obstacles.
It also features the ‘Safety Seat Alert’ system which again is an improvement over an existing system, the lane departure warning system which vibrates the driver’s seat to alert him if it senses that the car is straying away from its intended course or if there’s an imminent danger ahead.

As with all new and improved systems of all types, Cadillac’s system is still being tested and refined and is currently limited by several factors, such as its need for clearly visible road markings, without which it does not function. All of the bugs will probably have been ironed out by the time the system makes it into production around the year 2015.

Many of the technologies being used together to create their Super Cruise, are already available on their new XTS and ATS luxury sedans - systems like rear automatic braking, full-speed range adaptive cruise control, intelligent Brake assist, forward collision alert, safety alert seat, collision preparation, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, rear view camera and head up display.

GM have hinted that they want to introduce the system by 2015 and reduce the number of accidents and casualties in their cars - a laudable initiative!
