To say Cadillac made a massive bet with its upcoming Lyriq crossover would be the GM understatement of the year. The company already had to postpone its reveal to August 6th just to make sure it will garner enough attention – it is, after all, Cadillac’s first fully electric vehicle. We already know the form factor – 7-seat, three-row crossover – but we had no idea about the interior. Until now.
Of course, knowing how the all-new Cadillac Escalade flagship SUV premiered with a 38-inch curved OLED display it was an easy decision for the automaker to use the same approach. There are differences, though, according to Thompson – who shared some juicy insights during a recent interview with Electrek.
The Escalade solution is a bit tricky, though – there are two separate, overlapped displays forming the custom interface. On the other hand, the Lyriq has evolved and will arrive with a single-piece display sporting a 33-inch diagonal. More importantly, we also know another specification of the massive screen.
It will be 5 inches (127 mm) tall and has been repositioned higher up on the dashboard compared to the Escalade. “The size of the Cadillac Lyriq display is a huge differentiator for us. The form factor is going to be very industry leading. The huge 33-inch display is a very big differentiator for us, even among the other brands in our portfolio,” explained Thompson.
Also, the screen will again feature three distinct information areas – one directly in front of the driver (aka the instrument cluster) and two others to the left and right of the driver’s line of sight. The latter will be touch-controlled, and the middle zone will be governed via a rotary dial.
Be sure to check out the instrument cluster shot in the gallery - if we are not mistaken it features the Lyriq's official rear design! Also, if we are to believe the shown data, adding the 283 miles already driven and the 76 miles of remaining range (battery stands at 24% in the photo) we could end up with a total range of 359 miles. Of course, do take these with a grain of salt.
To the far left the driver will have access to standard controls such as interacting with the lights or setting up the head-up display. On the right resides the wide-infotainment screen area – but Thompson has also shared a little secret. The 33-inch surface will be capable – at certain times, for example when the vehicle is stopped or charging – to adapt to a cinematic full-screen experience.
As far as technical details are concerned, the Lyriq will become one of the first vehicle in General Motors’ range to use the all-new modular electric platform along with the company’s Ultium new-age batteries.
Of course, we will have to wait for the online reveal on August 6th for the exact power and capacity details – the new packs can accommodate anything between 50 and 200 kWh. We do know the exact production location, though – GM's new EV hub, the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant.
