Cadillac has taken the wraps off its Converj electric car concept for the first time at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and has since considered putting it into production. The problem is that sales of its coupe models haven’t been the best lately. But last year in August, a decision had been reached.
So what changed for them to announced that the Converj will enter production as the ELR coupe? It’s simple: the electric propelled car is to become a sort of global halo car, and Cadillac has already make it officially known that it will be on sale in China.
This is Cadillac’s second largest car market by volume, and the automaker will introduce both the ELR and the full-size XTS sedan in China, most likely by 2013.
“China has quickly become the fastest-growing market for Cadillac. Last year, sales rose by 73 percent,” said Akerson. “Introducing the XTS is part of our strategy of adding one new model per year to our Cadillac lineup in China through 2016 to address the needs of luxury car buyers nationwide.”
