Cadillac CT6 PHEV Could Be China's Pollution Killer at Auto Shanghai 2015

Remember those biology classes when you had to dissect frogs to learn about nature's twisted ways? We do, but we grew up, and we're more into cutting cars in half now. Just kidding, but we do like going into technical details when it comes to a new model.

Nevermind this introduction, the point is Cadillac brought the CT6 plug-in hybrid at Auto Shanghai 2015. So we took a tour of Cadillac's stand and managed to shoot a cut-off CT6 PHEV, showing how the sedan was fitted with the new powertrain.

Since we mentioned it, the Caddy CT6 plug-in hybrid uses a four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that makes a duo with a rear wheel electric variable transmission (EVT). This solution offers two electric motors that take total power output to 340 HP and 432 lb-ft (586 Nm) of torque.

Engineers hid an 18.4 kWh Li-ion battery between the rear seats and the trunk but for now we don't get to know how many miles can the CT6 PHEV go without recharging.

Also in the mystery department lies the fuel economy offered by the luxury sedan after its semi-electric transformation. Cadillac says fuel consumption is down by half, helped by Regen on Demand feature. Drivers can switch that on by pressing the paddles on the steering wheel. Once such action is taken, the car will slow down as it prepares to negotiate a turn for a better exit.

Whan we described in words can be clearly seen in the batch of live photos picturing the dissected luxury sedan patiently waiting for onlookers to find its secrets.

It's good to see how Chinese buyers are given plenty of options in terms of greener, alternative powertrains, given the state of pollution in some of China's largest cities. The Cadillac CT6 plug-in hybrid will also be available on the US market, but complete details and specs will most likely surface later on.
