Cadillac Converj Receives Green Light for Production

Judging by the facts, it looks like the Cadillac Converj might see the daylight after all, as General Motors has put the luxury coupe project back in its product plan, after it has been recently approved for production by product executives. The car is expected to be launched in 2013 as a 2014 model, as related by a GreenCarReports inside source.

The production model will feature “a Generation 1.5 Voltec” powertrain. It would be an updated version of the extended-range electric powertrain of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, possibly will feature better acceleration to suit the Cadillac tradition. Cadillac’s Converj concept car was first unveiled in January 2009 at the Detroit Auto Show. The concept got a lot of likes and during 2009 GM gave it the green light for production, with then-product chief Bob Lutz saying in January 2012 it had been approved by the management.

But the road went to an abrupt halt for the Cadillac Converj two months later when it was shut down. Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell said that the Converj program had not reached “a point at which development would be occurring in earnest in any case.”

The manufacturer gave two reasons for ending the program almost 18 months ago. The first one was that GM could not make a profit on the low volume sales the Converj had been planned for. The second one was that product planners were concerned that the greater weight and additional luxury features would cut its electric range and performance, this way reducing its appeal.
