At the beginning of May, the crew from Hennessey took a C8 Corvette down the Continental Tires Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas at speeds that reached 205.1 mph (330.07 kph). By all accounts, that’s the fastest a Corvette from the current generation ever went down a piece of tarmac.
The milestone was reached using just a slightly modified Vette. One of the most prominent additions was a stainless steel exhaust that cranked up power by 21 hp at the rear wheels and added an extra 19 lb-ft of torque at the same spot.
In this configuration, the Corvette was later pitted against a stock Lamborghini Huracan, and despite the increased acceleration and the quicker start, it eventually lost the fight both from a standstill and when going for a rolling start.
Now, here’s the Vette again (video below), with the same Hennessey exhaust system used in the said stunts, doing its thing on the dyno. And the sound it makes sure is not for the weak of heart.
“We designed a new stainless-steel exhaust system for the C8 that slightly increases power (20 hp), improves sound and is lighter by around 12 pounds,” said in a statement.
“We’ve been doing some validation testing and thought that a run over 200-mph would be the ultimate test of performance and durability for our new exhaust system. We also installed a Nitrous Oxide system to bump power to around 650 HP. We are very pleased with the results and we will be releasing our C8 exhaust upgrade in the very near future.”
The exhaust system is not the only upgrade the Texas-based tuner is working on for the Chevrolet Corvette. Two cars are being fitted and tested with a variety of parts, including what is dubbed the world’s first twin turbo system for the car. Wheels, tires, suspension and brakes are also in the works.
