When Chevrolet came out with the C8, a few enthusiasts and quite a handful of purists were baffled by the switch to a dual-clutch transmission. “It’s not a ‘Vette without a manual” is how these people complain about the switch to Tremec M1L, but then again, the eight-speed transmission is quicker than the torque-converter automatic in every respect.
“But what about the fun factor? Is the Corvette Stingray any fun without a three-pedal setup?” The answer to that is simple if you like to clutch in and clutch out using your left foot, but if it’s donuts you’re more interested in, Zack Bowman has the proof you were expecting.
Road & Track’s senior editor can’t say a thing about how the C8 drives until October 2019 because there’s an embargo, but nevertheless, even the super-sticky Z51 Performance Package will donut the heck out of the rear wheels in an empty parking lot. Like every other ‘Vette since the C1, the low-down torque of the small-block V8 does the job nicely.
General Motors codenamed the 6.2-liter engine LT2 as an evolution to the LT1 in the seventh generation, and customers can expect two outputs for the 2020 model year. 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque (630 Nm) are the ratings for the regular ‘Vette while the Z51 levels up to 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet thanks to the sports exhaust.
Bowman uploaded a few posts on Instagram where the mid-engined Corvette can be seen testing together with the lightweight Lotus Exige and ever-popular Porsche 911, so prepare for a lot of comparisons next month. The next step would be the C8 on the blacktop, proving itself on the quarter-mile in 11.3 seconds at 121 miles per hour without any modification.
Going forward, the targa top will be joined by the convertible while the 2022 model year is certain to bring the Z06 out to play. Last time we’ve heard anything on the subject, the twin-turbocharged option is expected with as many as 800 horsepower and tons more torque for smokier donuts.
