Even though production of the 2021 Corvette will be halted for a week at the beginning of February, we have a reason to rejoice because a popular option is coming back to the mid-engine sports car. As the headline implies, the 5VM Ground Effects Kit in Visible Carbon Fiber is once again available to order.
Discontinued last year over a supplier issue when the health crisis was encroaching on North America, this upgrade is listed at $4,695 under part number 84137506 on Chevrolet Accessories. Not only does it give the Corvette a ground-hugging appearance, but more downforce should help at higher speeds and in the twisties when you drive like a man on a mission.
“Precision built for a perfect fit, this package was developed by Chevrolet engineers and designers who know your vehicle best.” Three parts are included, starting with a front splitter. Two side rocker panels complete the list, and of course, all the necessary screws and washers are included too.
Chevrolet fails to mention if we’re looking at dry- or wet-type carbon fiber, which is pretty important when you think about it. Also known as pre-preg carbon fiber, the wet stuff weighs less and it’s stronger because the autoclave process eliminates all the air bubbles. Considering how many dollars Chevy is asking for the 5VM, let’s hope it’s the high-quality option.
Backed up by a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty, this upgrade requires the Z51 package or high-wing spoiler. The Golden Bowtie recommends dealer installation, which is the right way of doing it considering that labor doesn’t cost a lot and the dealership has all the required equipment and expertise.
On an ending note, I also need to mention the elephant in the room. I’m referring to independent shops that copied the 5VM last year when it was officially unavailable. AG Motorsports offers this upgrade at $2,799 including shipping, and thankfully, AGM clearly mentions pre-preg carbon fiber.
