C-X75 Supercar Could Return As F-Type Successor, Mid-Engined Layout Possible

In a tweet from June 2019, former design director Ian Callum said that his greatest sadness while at Jaguar was that the C-X75 “got away” without series production. Only a handful were ever made, concept car and prototypes, but the hybrid supercar with YASA electric motors and a 19-kWh battery didn’t make the cut anyway.

Serving as the spiritual successor to the XJ220 of the 1990s, the C-X75 arrived in 2010 to celebrate 75 years since Jaguar was founded by William Lyons as the replacement of the Swallow Sidecar Company. Jaguar was more or less a rebranding of SS Cars Limited, and back then, Lyons claimed “the name is distinctive and can’t be connected or confused with any similar foreign name.”

Fast-forward to the present day, and Autocar reports that the higher-ups are set on “a mid-engined layout for the next generation of the F-Type.” The newcomer would “revive a number of design cues from the ill-fated concept,” but that’s wrong.

The C-X75 looked like nothing else back in 2010, but following the likes of the Bugatti Divo and McLaren Senna, we’re not too sure if this design would be relevant in the 2020s. Callum suggested to Autocar that “Jaguar has progressed at least two approaches” to the F-Type, and you’ll like what you’ll hear next.

One of the possibilities is “the short-nosed electric and mid-engined format” proposed by Callum, and the other features “a longer bonnet to accommodate front-mounted internal combustion engines” such as “a hybridized V8.”

Jaguar is expected to get twin-turbo V8s from BMW and BMW M going forward, replacing the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 in the F-Type R, SVR, and Project 8, F-Pace SVR, as well as the XE SV Project 8. In an application such as the M5 Competition, the S63 engine develops 625 PS and 750 Nm of torque.

To date, most F-Type models sold from a total of approximately 62,000 were coupes (70 percent). As for the C-X75 project, the decision to pull the plug came towards the end of 2012 for reasons only the higher-ups know for sure.
