BYD Calls for EV Scrappage Scheme

Chinese manufacturer BYD wants the government to approve a scrappage scheme to be applied for customers who purchase all-electric battery vehicles, as well as other alternative energy cars. BYD says the success of these type of cars depends on the desired subsidies, despite some of the officials' reluctance into encouraging EV buyers in such an early stage.

"We're at a critical make-or-break juncture in our effort," BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu said at a conference quoted by just-auto.com. "The government needs to play a key role and help us reduce their cost, especially for private buyers."

The chairman wants the government to approve the scheme in whatever form they see fit, as long as they approve it. Among the measures to be taken, Wang said allowing more cab companies to use EVs may be a desired step. Some government officials, however, disagree...

"Why do we need to provide subsidies and rebates for wealthy private buyers who would be the first in line to buy electric cars? That's a question some of us in the government are asking," Chen Jianguo, a senior official at the National Development and Reform Commission was quoted as saying by the source.

BYD supports such a scheme primarily because of its involvement in the automotive sector and, especially, because it plans on building electric cars. Dubbed the e6, BYD's EV will be launched locally this year.

The hybrid F3DM is already on sale, but only to corporate customers. The reason behind the delay of launching the hybrid for private buyers is, Wang says, the price of the car. F3DM is priced at CNY150,000 ($22,000), which too expensive for most Chinese.
