BWM Unveils X5 Pickup Truck... Just Kidding

A couple of months ago, BMW made an April Fools joke that nobody really laughed at because the cat was let out of the bag when the M3 pickup was spotted testing on the Nurburgring.

Back then, BMW made the bold claim that their M3 with a bead was the fastest pickup in the world and Australians immediately fell in love with the idea. Thankfully, the German carmaker has not announced it’s going to make a production version.

However, this raises a very interesting question: If Australians would have like a really fast ute based on a sedan, what would the Americans go for? The answer couldn’t be simpler - a huge X7 or an X5-based pickup.

Photoshop wizard Theophilus Chin was curious what this would look like and took the cutting tool to the X5 sports utility vehicle and has fitted it with a large bed and a double-cab. The virtual X5 pickup even has a name, GranLastwagen, which is a translation of GranTruck in German. It looks like the lines at the back are actually a stretched version of the X6’s coupe-ish backside.

Let us know what you think. Is this an interesting dream that should never become reality, or should BMW forget about its heritage and offer American customers a luxury pickup? Some people might argue the the X5 is already ugly enough and that it’s going to be too expensive, but think of all those celebrities in America. Joking aside, it’s impossible to think such a monster will ever go into production, but we bet there’s somebody in the custom car industry that knows how to make one.
