Buy a Toyota Corolla Instead a Honda Civic. Here’s Why

If we’re strictly referring to the US market, the compact sedan segment is dominated by two cars - the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla. Wearing the 2014 updates, they’re both pretty much the same, but there are some differences to favor one or the other.

They’re both Japanese, powered by 1.8-liter four-cylinder engines with variable valve timing, have CVTs and are rock strong over time. But then, slight difference can be seen and here are the most important ones putting the Corolla a bit ahead.

The new Corolla looks better. Not saying that the Civic looks like a malnourished horse, but surprisingly, the 2014 Corolla looks more youthful, especially the S model which comes with a different sportier front bumper and larger wheels.

The Corolla is bigger. Not by much, the difference is about 16 liters more, but as a passenger you’ll surely feel it, especially regarding headroom.

CVT in the Corolla feels better. Although CVTs can’t be said to feel right for a car enthusiast, the one in the Corolla manages to handle better the 1.8 engine and it also offers paddle shifters to simulate gear changes when you want.

Slightly better ride. The Corolla feels a bit more forgiving when coming to dampening road imperfections, making it more suitable for long travels.

Better mileage. The Civic is said to return a combined consumption of 33.1 mpg while the Corolla makes 31.7 mpg. However, in real life it has been reported that the Civic does 26.4 mpg and the Corolla 29.7 mpg.

Less cash. The top trim Civic Touring comes at $26,200, while a Corolla S with a lot of optionals (including 17-inch alloys, rear disc brakes, auto climate control, premium navigation, SofTex leather upholstery, smart key system and moonroof) is available at $25,720.
