Buy a Photo Taken by Lewis Hamilton. No, Really, It’s for Charity

Sports stars can be some of the biggest celebrities of this world, on par with Hollywood actors and first-rank politicians, so getting to know more about their personal life can be a bit tricky. Unless you’re a seasoned stalker, that is.

Fans are always interested in what’s behind what they can see on TV, which explains the ridiculous prices some useless objects sell for simply because they belonged to one famous person or the other. It’s the opportunity of owning a piece of that man’s or woman’s life that will have people search deep in their wallets and flush their savings.

That’s exactly the kind of reaction the Zoom auction is counting on, and it’s got plenty of experience since it has already reached its fourth edition this year. Unlike other similar events, though, this one is a charitable fund collection for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

The mechanism is as simple as it is effective. We all take hundreds of pictures every year (some even more), and the Formula One stars make no exception. Drivers, team principals and even Bernie Ecclestone have been asked to take one photograph during the 2015 season, have it printed, signed and submitted to go under the hammer. I don’t know about you, but since it is an event that involves kids, I’d be a bit worried about Bernie’s entry.

On February 5, there was an exclusive gala held at London’s InterContinental Park Lane where some of the pictures were auctioned, but there’s still a chance to get your hands on some via an online auction on the Coys website.

Don’t expect any masterpieces, though. Let’s take Lewis Hamilton, the reigning champion, as an example: the Brit sent in a picture of Roscoe, his British bulldog, snapped in front of the Colosseum in Rome (he also submitted one with a flowing river at dusk). Others - such as Sebastian Vettel - turned to the beauties of nature, while Kimi Räikkönen took advantage of the opportunity to reinstate his love for the Prancing Horse team.

You can view all the pictures on the Zoom Auction website, where an archive of previous events is also available. I would just like to point out that my woes about Bernie Ecclestone were founded: that thing is creepy. Not the deer, the other one.
