Button Urged Team to Help Him in Defending World Title

Reigning Formula One champion Jenson Button insisted that winning a second consecutive world title this year doesn't depend entirely of him, but will most likely be the result of team work. In other words, if he'll get the proper help from his new team (including Lewis Hamilton, at some point), the 30-year old Brit sees himself as a title contender this season.

A few days after reckoning that Ferrari seems like the team to beat in 2010, Button told the Spanish newspaper Marca that it takes an entire team to win the championship, not only a single driver's effort. In order to sustain his theory, he exemplified it by the titles won by two of his main rivals for the 2010 championship, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso.

In Formula One a driver cannot win the Championship by himself. Michael (Schumacher) and Fernando (Alonso) never would have won it by themselves,” said Button, according to the aforementioned source.

Curiously enough, most of the F1 pundits saw Button as a likely candidate for a second fiddle role within the McLaren organization when he signed the 3-year deal with the Woking team, as it's a well-known fact that Hamilton is a protege of the McLaren management. Meaning the F1 champion might have easily given himself an advice when urging his team to favor one driver for the world title.

Regardless of McLaren's plans for the 2010 season, the fact of the matter is that Button already felt comfortable with his new MP4-25 this week, following his second outing with the car at Jerez. The Brit emerged as the fastest driver in the combined timing reports last week and, although still unhappy with a few parameters of his car, admitted his team is going into the right direction in terms of car development for Bahrain.

The last test of the winter is scheduled to take place later this week, in Barcelona, starting on Thursday. The 4-day session will hopefully give Hamilton the chance to do a dry-track test on the MP4-25, as the 2008 world champion's outings at Jerez were mostly influenced by rain.
