Button's Future Depends on Brawn-Mercedes Deal

Jenson Button's future at Brackley seems strongly connected with Mercedes' desire to buy into the Brawn GP team in the upcoming couple of years. According to media reports in the UK, the reigning world champion is now demanding a worthy salary for his incredible performance in 2009, and the only chance Ross Brawn can deliver that sum of money would be if finding the necessary backing for their 2010 operations.

Although obviously in a tough position – financially speaking – Brawn admitted that Button's current salary is not even near what it's supposed to be, considering the fact that he has just become world champion. Consequently, the management team is trying to make some progress in the money talks in order to get the Briton to sign a multi-year contract with the team.

Jenson has a contract with us. But that contract is not the salary of a World Champion, not the salary of a team that is in a much stronger position than it was 10 months ago. We're working with Jenson to find a balance between what we can afford and what he feels is fair for his status and the contribution he can make in the future,” said Brawn.

According to the latest report from the Daily Mail, it seems that the money handed by Honda to the Brackley based team for the 2009 season – in order to assure a smooth withdrawal from the series – are already gone, while the funding secured via the team's sponsorship commitments were not enough to maintain a good financial status within the organization.

According to reports in recent months, German manufacturer Mercedes is looking to buy 75 percent into Brawn GP starting 2011, as soon as their current partnership with Team McLaren will expire. Although continuing to control 40 percent out of the Woking based team, the carmaker would gladly switch their factory support to Brackley because of the constant scandals involving McLaren team in recent years.

In case Brawn will secure that transition, it could also keep Button at Brackley for a long period of time.
