Much like how Renault and Lotus started acting all buddy-buddy a couple of years ago, McLaren and Honda are now BFFs after Japanese engines found their way into the F1 team's cars.
Of course, a corporate partnership is as dry as a Martini, so the automakers decided to use their superstar racing drivers and make a commercial they can share with the fans.
So here's Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, arriving at the McLaren factory to turn one of the road-going supercars into a time machine. It's a clear reference to the famous DeLorean DMC-12 from Back to the Future, only this time hitting 88 mph (141.6 km/h) will be much easier.
Fernando is the one responsible for turning the 650S into a time machine and he even installed a remote control system, which he uses to do donuts with the car while Button is inside it.
But why did they want to go back in time in the first place? We need only tell you this: 1988 Brazilian GP. It was a glorious race for the legendary F1 driver Ayrton Senna, who was also using a Honda engine in a McLaren car at the time.
However, his car developed problems and he was forced to start the race near the back of the field. However, after tens of laps, Senna charged all the way up the field. He was the 21st on lap 1, 15th on lap 4, 8th on lap 10, into the points on lap 13. By lap 20, he was challenging the leader.
Editor's note: Senna was actually disqualified at the 1988 Brazilian GP. I wonder if Button and Alonso are going to mention that in the next video.
