He may be in the habit of not-so-glamorously burglarizing food carts after closing time, but one man from Portland, Oregon, gets credit for staying ahead of the curve and using a drone for aerial recon.
Portland police were able to track down and arrest 34-year-old Christopher Behurst after surveillance video placed him at the scene of the crime: a food cart belonging to Piedmont Station Food Carts pod, which was broken into last week. He was identified by the jacket he wore during the act, which, The Smoking Gun notes, he may have also worn during two other previous hits.
During this particular hit, which also occurred last week, Behurst used a drone for aerial recon, before heading in himself. He got away with tablets, business checks, money, speakers, a first-aid kit, utensils and other goods, the same media outlet notes. Sadly (for him), he forgot to consider surveillance cameras, so he was caught in the act, as he was leaving the place with the loot in his backpack.
The owner arrived in the morning to see the place had been broken into, so she checked the surveillance footage. She saw a small drone hovering around for some time and even coming close to the locks. After that, a man cut through the fence and made his way inside the pod, and then her cart.
“Sure enough, we see a drone come in, hover at the windows and then at the door, then fly off,” Kiaha Rasmussen tells SacBee. “I’m shocked, angry, and also mildly impressed.”
Behurst was arrested and charged with theft and burglary, both felonies. He was released on his own recognizance and on bond the next day, but police may be liking him for two more attempts of burglary at one nearby cart. The investigation is underway, with more changes pending according to its conclusion.
