Alex Rodriguez, considered by many most talented professional baseball player in the U.S., is now $500,000 poorer after his rental SUV got broken into in San Francisco.
The San Francisco Chronicle notes that A-Rod was in town on ESPN duties and the break-in actually took place during the 2 hours he spent inside a posh eatery, grabbing dinner with friends. It is believed ESPN had rented a black Nissan SUV for Rodriguez and staff, and it was pretty much loaded.
Initial estimates say that the goods that have gone missing are worth about half a million dollars. They include a laptop, jewelry, a camera and a bag, and are believed to belong to Rodriguez himself. The good news is that the break-in was captured on a nearby surveillance camera so the SFPD Burglary Unit, which is handling the investigation as a top priority case, has something to work with from the start.
Officer Adam Lobsinger, a San Francisco police spokesman, confirms the break-in for the publication, noting that it took place between 9 and 11 o’clock at night. However, since the victim is a private citizen and the investigation is ongoing, Lobsinger cannot confirm whether Rodriguez is the victim.
In a statement to TMZ, A-Rod says that, indeed, all the stuff was his. “I am saddened that several items that were of a personal nature and irreplaceable with sentimental value were taken,” he explains. “I am encouraged that local law enforcement has security footage of the crime and are doing all they can to get the items back.”
In a separate statement for the same media outlet, Rodriguez’s spokesperson will have you know that, despite various reports saying the items’ estimated value was around $500,000, that’s not accurate. “The financial value of the items stolen from Alex Rodriguez’s vehicle while he was having dinner is being grossly exaggerated,” the spokesperson explains.
