On June 1st, 2011, GM originally filed the application for the ‘Velite’ trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Although it wasn’t granted, the American automobile manufacturer did it again on November 19th, which means one thing.
There’s a new convertible coming in the near future, or will it be a just a badge engineered Opel model? Let me explain - looking back at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, that’s when General Motors brand Buick presented the world with a roadster concept car, known as the Velite.
According to the first pic included in the photo gallery below, the trademark application for the moniker features a font style that’s a bit less elegant than the one in the second pic. It’s easy to see the Velite lettering featured with the 2004 concept is way more stylized than the rather plain one of today.
Nevertheless, application number 86458313 was categorized as “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles, sport utility vehicles, trucks, vans, engines therefor and structural parts thereof.”
Cadillac chief executive officer Johan de Nysschen has previously declared that new models, a convertible being highly probable as well, are in the pipeline. These new models will join the new-gen SRX (or XT5), as well as the soon-to-be-released CT6 flagship sedan.
It’s rumored that drop-top will come as the successor of the XLR or an ATS / CTS with the roof chopped off. Because Cadillac and Buick are both GM automakers, we suspect they may share their platforms if the Velite is really going to happen. But wait a minute...
...recent reports claim that Buick is planning to introduce a rebadged Opel Cascada, a soft-top convertible which is set to debut in Australia next year as the Holden Cascada. That makes us wonder if Buick considers to rename the Cascada the Velite. Let’s wait and see how things will turn out in the end.
