We've seen some strange drag racing combos over the years, but this takes the cake. You've got three brand new (almost) German cars with turbo engines going up against an old-timer like the Buick LeSabre.
I'd imagine most A45 AMG owners don't even know what a Buick LeSabre. It's a car from an entirely different era, where sedans had two doors and fancy wings. There's no traction control, stability control or even ABS. About the only thing they have in common is round wheels and headlights, if that.
Meanwhile, the German lineup is tech-laden. The star of this show should be the Audi S4 sedan because it's got the biggest engine, a 3-liter turbo with 354 horsepower sent to all four wheels. However, it's disqualified for moving a bit too soon.
The A45 AMG provides the biggest contrast against the Buick LeSabre. It's an all-wheel-drive hatchback with an over-tuned 2-liter delivering 360 HP (it's pre-facelift). It's also quite short by comparison.
Over the quarter mile, the A45 manages to beat the old-timer, which is probably rocking a modified V8. Back in 1960, when it was new, the LeSabre was supposed to have a 6-liter making 250 HP. But without AWD and launch control, it would need at least 400 to keep up with the AMG.
And finally, we have the Golf GTI, which gets disqualified as well. It wouldn't have mattered since the A45 barely won the race by less than half a second. We're only mentioning it because the original GTI came out in 1975, and that's 15 years after the LeSabre. I don't even think hatchbacks were around in 1960, as the European boxes didn't have trunk openings at first.
But anyways, let us know what you think of this oddball drag race. Maybe somebody can tell us if this really is Columbia as well.
