Despite having a pair of capable crossovers in its lineup, Buick is lacking a true mid-size utility vehicle to better compete with other automakers (both mainstream and luxury). To remedy this situation, Buick is preparing to take the cover off its all-new Envision crossover later this year, but there’s no word yet as to whether it will be offered in the U.S.
While there isn’t much to tell from the draped crossover, the Buick Envision does have a more conventional two-box shape losing the arched roofline and sharp body creases of the 2011 Buick Envision Concept. From what we can see through the thin veil, some of the concept’s aggressive face could be making it to production with the large waterfall grille and the oversized air intakes/fog light bezels. Buick promises a “dynamic and assertive styling” that “fuses iconic Buick design cues with the brand’s new high-end, refined global design concepts.”

Other than the fact that it will debut later this year, Buick did not say when or where it will officially introduce the Envision, but whenever it does come out, it will have an advanced drivetrain. In the press release, Buick says that the Envision will feature a new powertrain, a new all-wheel-drive system and a new start/stop technology that will be standard for all trim levels.

Buick did not reveal its plans for the Envision outside of China, but the last time Buick had a mid-size crossover in the U.S. was when it offered the minivan-based Rendezvous, which was similar to the Pontiac Aztek. It’s quite possible that GM doesn’t will continue to leap frog vehicles between Buick and Cadillac to prevent any overlap. Buick currently offers the compact Encore and full-size Enclave CUV, while Cadillac sells the SRX and full-size Escalade SUV.
