In a spectacular turn of events, Gooding & Company along with comedy star Jay Leno sold Lot 47 of the Pebble Beach 2014 auction event in two rounds of bidding. At first, the 1957 Buick Caballero Estate Wagon went all the way to $300k, blitzing the $100,000 to $125,000 pre-sale estimate.
The original runner-up bidder cashed in a whopping $280k more in the second round of bidding, translating to a final price of $580,000. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, petrolheads and car shy people, say hello to the most expensive post-WWII American station wagon ever sold at auction.

Of course, the Monterey Car Week was full of ultra expensive Ferrari Le Mans racers and a lot of other exotica from the 20th century, but these cars sort of lack that down to earth feel a good ol' station wagon emanates through every pore. And come on, who can say no to a pillarless car that was once the flagship of the Buick model lineup? More so when you take into account that this ride was professionally restored by Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage and bears the signature of former U.S. President George W. Bush.

Inspired by the 1956 Buick Centurion Dream Car, the Buick Caballero Estate Wagon was sold to a guy from California in 1957 and remained in his possession until 2012. Although this ride is older than many of us, a 300 horsepower 363 c.i. V8 fed by a four-barrel downdraft carb animates the rear wheels of this American classic via a slick Dynaflow automatic transmission. With front disc brakes and parallel-wishbone front suspension with coil springs, this old school ride is both show and full of go.
