Well this is something nobody was expecting from Buick to show up with at the Detroit Auto Show. If French isn’t your forte, you may want to know that Avenir is French for future. Too bad this ride here is but a simple concept vehicle, although there are a few changes to see some of its aesthetic cues and technologies on Buick models of the near future.
Ed Welburn, the vice president of General Motors’ global design division, declared that the Avenir is offering “an exciting vision of where it [Buick] can go,” the reason why we highlighted the possibility to see Buick step up its game in the following time frame. So we assessed what the brand wanted to prove with this ride, but what’s there worth liking?
It’s easy to be carried away by the Rodin sculpture qualities of the exterior design, including the cool seep-spear bodyside visual cue and the trademark Buick waterfall grille which dominates the front of this vehicle. As spectacular as the outside may be, the real icing on the cake is represented by what it feels like inside and the Avenir’s onboard gadgets.
Boasting with individual seats or four passengers and a suite of driver-recognition features that can automatically sync infotainment preferences, this is a technological showcase that teases what to look forward to on 2017 - 2018 model year Buick models. A next-generation IntelliLink infotainment system is also featured, controlled via a gigantic 12-inch high-resolution touchscreen. Oh, and do check out those humongous color displays acting as rear passenger entertainment. Pretty cool stuff!
Last but not least, we’ll highlight that the oily bits are all-new and may arrive on future GM models, including Buicks. Starting with a programmable suspension damping system, the long, flowing bonnet hides a next-gen direct-injected V6 motor with fuel-saving cylinder deactivation and a start/stop feature.
Though there’s no word on output, we can tell you that the engine is mated to a new nine-speed paddle-shift auto, which drives all four wheels via a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system.

It’s a great looking fantasy machine this, although we can’t help but imagine that those taillights were heavily-inspired by those of the current generation Opel / Vauxhall Astra GTC.
