Bugatti Recalls All Chiron Pur Sport Hypercars Because Rear Tires May Develop Cracks

As with every other hypercar that flaunts well over 1,000 horsepower and the kind of torque that makes heavy-duty turbo diesel trucks blush in awe, the Chiron Pur Sport is very expensive to maintain. The first service, for example, costs $25,000 for nothing more than fresh oil and coolant.
The wheels and tires have to be replaced very often as well at $50,000 for the wheels and just under $45,000 for a set of Michelins. The French tiremaker calls the Chiron’s tires the Pilot Sport Cup 2R TR, and they have to be replaced every 2,500 miles or 4,000 kilometers according to Bugatti.

Limited to 60 units worldwide, the handling-oriented Pur Sport is recalled due to a peculiar issue. “On one prototype, some cracks have been observed. Pur Sport tires are specific to the model line. The tire is neither defective nor noncompliant. The condition needs to be managed,” explains Bugatti.

Based in Molsheim, the Volkswagen-owned hypercar manufacturer observed this problem unfold in September 2021. The supplier was contacted pretty much immediately, and Michelin confirmed the following month that “additional DOT weeks could be impacted.” Come December 2021, the peeps at Michelin told Bugatti to limit maximum tire mileage and usage age to prevent crack propagation, as seen with the initial prototype.

As the headline implies, every single vehicle delivered thus far will get rear tires that are less than two years old. After the replacement, Chiron Pur Sport customers will be recommended to replace the rubber shoes before hitting 1,875 miles (3,000 kilometers) or 1.5 years, whichever occurs first.

Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration state that production vehicles have been stopped for delivery in September 2021 and that root cause analysis is ongoing. In the meantime, customers will be informed through phone or email to arrange an appointment in preparation for the federally mandated first-class mailed recall notification.

A total of nine Bugs are recalled stateside.
