Bugatti Chiron Is the World's Quickest 0-249-0 Mph Production Car

Like its predecessor, the Bugatti Chiron is all about raw power and straight line acceleration. Yes, it can corner decently for a car its size and yes, it has spades of luxury inside, but at the end of the day, the hypercar is still little else than a very big engine on wheels.

It's also an expensive one with a price tag of $3 million and a limited run of 500 units, 300 of which are already spoken for. We doubt the other 200 will have a hard time finding their owners, especially after the Chiron just set a new world record for the 0-400-0 km/h (0-249-0 mph) sprint.

Reaching 400 km/h in a production car is something that seemed impossible two decades ago. Maybe not impossible, but surely not financially viable. Well, it took the madness of a Volkswagen CEO to give the green light to the Veyron project, and the industry was changed for ever.

Now, the Chiron is taking over from where its forerunner left off. There still aren't a lot of cars out there that can reach 400 km/h, let alone do it as quickly as the Chiron, so the competition for setting a world record isn't exactly tight. However, that doesn't make Bugatti's achievement any less spectacular.

Thanks to a set of videos released by the company just these past days, we know the Bug is capable of reaching the 400 km/h mark in just 32.6 seconds. That 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine and its 1,500 hp sure deliver, but how about the brakes?

Apparently, they're up to the task as well. Bugatti took a Chiron out for a 0-400-0 km/h run, and it returned home with a new world record. The beastly machine accelerated to the target speed and then came to a complete halt in just under 42 seconds, setting the bar high for anyone interested in jumping over it.

Driving the hypercar was former Formula One driver Pablo Montoya who wore a full protective suit and helmet during the run. The car needed 3,112 meters (1.93 miles) to perform the trick, and we'd be curious to know how many of them were required for braking.

“Of course, the Chiron is a super sports car that requires your full attention when you are behind the wheel," said Montoya. "At the same time, it gave me such a feeling of security and reliability that I was entirely relaxed and really enjoyed myself during my two days with the car."

The record-setting car will make its way to the Frankfurt Motor Show where hopefully it will still retain some of that grime and smell from its epic run. A special edition model with a not very discreet 42 on its grille will also be on display.
