Toro Rosso might be late on announcing their drivers' lineup for 2009, but they sure got some clues on where to look for following the first testing day at Jerez. Switzerland's Sebastien Buemi topped the first testing session on the Spanish circuit, recording a best time of 1:18.742 ahead of virtual 2009 teammate Sebastien Bourdais. The GP2 driver outscored the Frenchman by more than half-a-second on Tuesday and got a step closer to securing a racing seat with the Scuderia next season.
Buemi is set to test for Toro Rosso for the entire duration of the Jerez meeting (3 days), while Bourdais will share seats with former Super Aguri's Takuma Sato after today's session. It is expected that the Austrian team – now under full Red Bull ownership – will announce their drivers for the upcoming season after this week's tests.
With most F1 teams concentrating on different aspects of the technical developments on their 2009 machineries, Buemi helped Toro Rosso top McLaren Mercedes, Ferrari and BMW on the timing sheets.
The Woking-based team focused their efforts on Tuesday trying to develop their KERS unit, while also paying attention to car's set-up. Gary Paffett went on to finish 3rd overall, followed by veteran Pedro de la Rosa and Kimi Raikkonen. The Fin tried out several set-ups during yesterday's testing, while also running some long-distance configurations for the Maranello team.
BMW's Nick Heidfeld also hit the track on Tuesday, with the German team trying to improve their car's handling following the Barcelona testing session last month. Although admitting the car was improved as compared to its Barcelona run, Heidfeld recorded only the 6th time of the day.
Here are the complete results of the first testing session at Jerez:
1. Sebastien Buemi Scuderia Toro Rosso 1:18.742
