BSA Could Be Back As Mahindra Takes Over

BSA Could Be Back As Mahindra Takes Over 1 photo
British motorcycle maker BSA could make a comeback as Indian car and bike company Mahindra recently bought the dying brand.
Mahindra really made a statement, as it paid £3.4 million for the whole shares in BSA through its subsidiary company Classic Legends Pvt Ltd (CLPL).

CLPL grabbed all the 120,000 shares of the almost dead company with an individual price of £28.33, which basically grants them the right to produce and sell bikes under the BSA brand.

Mahindra said nothing about future plans with BSA for now, but last year it also bought 51 percent out of Peugeot Motorcycles, hinting it could tap more into the bike world sooner or later.

BSA Company produced military motorcycles fitted with Rotax engines as well as civilian ones powered by Yamaha under the BSA name. In 1997 production began on the hand built 400 cc Gold SR but demand for such machines fell by 2003 when production was ceased.

Its 1,000 cc Tempest model that was highly acclaimed in its prototype form did not reach production while the collaboration with MZ didn’t reach the promised potential. Their partnership ended when the parts business was sold.

Then, in 2008, a serious infringement of BSA Company’s trademarks occurred in India, when Tube Investments of India used the BSA trademark on electric scooters, and in 2015, the infringement cases were still in the High Court of Madras and the Supreme Court of India.

Starting 2012, BSA’s website was only listing the history of its bikes and no model on sale. The company continued to offer spare parts, though. In 2014, BSA in collaboration with Ripe Motorcycles launched the all-electric BSA John McLaren TAG 350, a small-wheel off-roader. Next year it added the BSA TAG 1000 (1kW) developed for motocross and that’s about all the company’s activity until Mahindra stepped in now.
