British Teen Billionaire Caught Speeding in a BMW Has Most British Excuse For It

Charlie Cadogan, the 19-year-old heir of one of the richest families in the UK, was caught speeding in his BMW down the A1 in June this year. His excuse for it isn’t what you might expect.

The Cardogan name might not ring a bell with you, so you should probably know that it’s one of the richest and most respectable families in the country. Charlie’s grandfather, the Earl of Cadogan, started a business empire worth £6.5 billion through property investment, and is actually richer than the Queen herself.

Charlie’s father is the Viscount Chelsea Edward Cadogan, and Charlie himself goes by the title of Honorable Charles William Llewellyn Cadogan. In short, these people know their way around fancy words, so it should be no surprise that Charlie found the perfect excuse for his speeding.

It wasn’t the desire to push the car or himself, it wasn’t because of his relatively young age, which is known for untamed impulses and the desire to show off. No, Charlie’s speeding was caused by his excitement at the idea that he would soon arrive to his family’s estate.

How’s that for fancy?

In an open letter he read in court, the teen billionaire says (as per the Sun): “I write this letter of mitigation to apologize for the offense I have committed. I completely understand why I have been charged.”

“I was driving from my home in London to my home in Scotland and the excitement of being close to home after a long drive perhaps led to a momentary blip of concentration in my speed for which there's no excuse,” Charlie continues. “I believe I have learned my lesson due to the disappointment of my parents and the disappointment in myself having committed an offense like this.”

The court partially agreed with him – but not on the fact that his disappointment was punishment enough. He was also fined £300 and had 4 points off his license.
