Becoming a car owner means new responsibilities that range from getting car insurance, regular maintenance of the vehicle and keeping up to speed with changes in the legislation.
For many drivers in the U.K., these responsibilities can be easily relayed to Google: new research conducted by private reg company click4reg shows a considerable number of drivers turn to the search engine for answers to issues they should know how to handle.
We’ve all turned to Google every now and then for answers to some of our silliest questions, but this is different. With drivers, the questions they want answered include paying taxes on the car, getting good car insurance, and maintenance issues like removing stains, jump-starting a vehicle or how to wash or sell a car.
The biggest volume of queries is on how you can jump-start a vehicle: the research shows 9,900 queries of this type each month. A monthly average of 4,400 owners try to find out from Google how to pay taxes on their vehicles, and 3,600 how to drive an automatic vehicle.
A strange but very popular query (with about 2,400 monthly hits) is on how to drive a car. Hopefully, these are not people with a valid license turning to Google for help. Other popular queries are how to wash, scrap or sell a car, how to find out who the real owner of a car is, how to get a dent out of a vehicle and, with 1,000 monthly hits, how to get it on with a significant other inside of a car.
The research was carried out with the marketing tool SEM Rush and highlights a certain lack of training and responsibility in car owners – there are about 40 million licensed drivers in Great Britain. Having so many of them go online for answers to questions they shouldn’t be asking is astounding.
