It looks like smart machines are already changing the battlefield, and the British Army is taking notes of that. Following the delivery of four Rheinmetall unmanned vehicles with cargo modules a year ago, Her Majesty’s Armed Forces ordered another batch. This time, the new ground robots are gonna be equipped with a fire support configuration.
This news comes after the Rheinmetall had already succeeded in placing its robotic vehicles in the Spiral 1 subproject of the U.K.’s experimentation program, which tests how unmanned vehicles can improve the firepower and capabilities of dismounted combat troops.

Rheinmetall’s Mission Master is a modular autonomous unmanned ground vehicle (A-UGV) that can be used for reconnaissance and surveillance operations, mount and dismount forces, and increase operational effectiveness.

What drives the robotic vehicles is the Rheinmetall PATH, an autonomous kit (A-kit) that allows military vehicles to operate unmanned even across complex terrains in hostile weather conditions. This technology allows the Mission Master to recognize and monitor objects, map and analyze terrain, and plan safe routes. The vehicles also come with a built-in security circuit board, so an operator with a tablet which has installed on it the Rheinmetall software can control the weapon station wirelessly.

Its platform allows for the installation of modular payloads onto the vehicle, thus it can be equipped for a wide array of operations. Called Mission Master – Fire Support, the four robotic vehicles ordered by the British army are armed with a 7.62 mm caliber remotely controlled weapon station.

Featuring a wide vertical and horizontal slewing range, the gun can aquire high precision and great performance over long distances. As with other ground robots from the range, these are semiautonomous since they need a person to engage targets.

The four Mission Master – Fire Support vehicles will be delivered by August this year. Additionally, training and support services, as well as spare parts, will be included as part of the order.
