British actor Craig Young, who recently starred in Jaguar’s newest F-Type R Coupe commercial, was recently spotted trying to fix his 1984 Mercedes-Benz 380SL. The Return to the Hiding Place actor seemed stressed out and a bit overwhelmed by the situation.
A couple of pictures with the British actor from the shooting of the new ad were recently released, having Young choosing the F-Type Coupe for what seems to be an escape. Young is Jaguar’s new bad boy, as the auto maker continues its five part series of commercials for the F-Type R Coupe.
In real life, on the other hand, the 37-year old actor seems to be rather the classic-car lover than a sports modern one. The 380 SL was imported in U.S. from 1981 to 1985 and was the least powerful of the U.S. imported R107 roadsters. Its engine came with a single row timing chain from 1981 through 1983.
The 1984 and 1985 models came with a double row timing chain from the factory. These early 380 models were plagued with chain failure problems and the problem was corrected by Mercedes-Benz, free of charge. Some models, however, escaped retrofit and may at some point fail as a result, so maybe that was the problem the British actor faced with his convertible.
The 1984 Mercedes 380SL came with a 8-cylinder-V engine (four-stroke), front-mounted, that develops 155 horsepower and 196 lb-ft (266 Nm) of torque. It wouldn’t be fare to do this, but the Jaguar F-Type Coupe is obviously a completely different league. It packs a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 550 horsepower engine that delivers powerful and efficient performance. But we’re not doing this.
As to Young’s problem, we're pretty sure everything turn out fine for his convertible.
