Bridgestone Announces Tire Allocation for Opening F1 Rounds

Until dealing with the intermediate tire problems that appeared during the Jerez de la Frontera test this week, Japanese tire manufacturer Bridgestone announced the tire allocations for the first three rounds of the 2010 Formula One championship.

The only news regarding the tire allocations for the Bahrain, Australian and Malaysian races regard the race at Albert Park, where Bridgestone learnt their lesson from last year's season opener and decided to bring harder compounds for their rubber. If last year the team used super soft and medium tires, this year they will have to choose between soft and hard compound.

As confirmed by Bridgestone a few months ago, the compound for the 2010 tires has been modified to resist to the new forces applied to the tires, due to the heavier fuel loads on the new cars (as in-race refueling will be banned in 2010).

We have changed all our dry compounds for this season, as the cars will be heavier and the stint lengths could be longer. We have also made changes to enable quicker warm-up times. We will bring harder tires to Australia than we did last season, but the compound allocation positions for Bahrain and Malaysia are the same as they were in 2009,” said Hirohide Hamashima, Bridgestone head of motorsport tire development.

Meaning the teams will have to make use of soft and medium tires in Bahrain, and soft and hard in Malaysia.

There will be a big challenge for teams this season on how they use their tires as they have fewer sets of dry tires available than before, particularly with the softer tire at each race,” added Hamashima.
