Briatore Sponsors Kenyan Football Team Zege FC

Flavio Briatore did not go to Kenya empty-handed. The Renault boss turned his head from Formula 1 action for a few days and switched it to football instead. While going to his Lion In The Sun resort in Kenya – where he is to spend his Christmas holidays – Briatore did not forget that he is also co-owning a football team and decided to pay the sport a little more attention.

And the first thing that popped into his head was gifting the local football team with an appropriate playing equipment. The Zege FC players were happy to find out that a new set of shorts & shirts will be waiting in the locker room before the new season.

“I saw these players playing bare feet at Mayungu when I walked around and promised to assist them with sports equipment. This is just something small that I brought with me. Many more items are coming in one months' time,” said Briatore, according to local newspaper Daily Nation.

The Italian is co-owner of England's Championship division club Queens Park Rangers, currently 9th overall in the standings after the first half of the season. While Bernie Ecclestone is also involved in sponsoring the team, Briatore is the one to have taken the football-owner role more seriously during the past year. The Italian also announced that a future collaboration between his club and Zege FC is not to be downplayed.

Briatore is the second F1 personage to make a sponsorship during the last few days, although his doesn't come even close to matching the one Michael Schumacher made the past week to the William J. Clinton Foundation. The 7-time world champion allegedly donated somewhere between $5 and $10 million to the above-named foundation (run by former American President Bill Clinton), whose initiative is to fight AIDS and climate change.
