Briatore Denies Retirement Rumors

Flavio Briatore dismissed rumors linking him to a retirement from Formula 1 at the end of 2010. The Renault boss insisted he is in for the long run and has no intention of leaving his team or the sport, as reported by the Italian media in December 2008.

The Italian revealed that helping the sport as a team director in times of economic regression such as these represent a new challenge for him and he could certainly not leave F1 at a moment like this.

“The plan is, I don't know really. I never said that to the Italian newspaper. I believe we are living in a very crucial moment in Formula One. This crisis we have, I believe, is something that makes everyone think,” said Briatore at the unveiling of his team's 2009 challenger, the Renault R29.

“What I want is to make sure that we have done what the managers need to do to give F1 the possibility to survive this crisis. And we need to change the business - instead of being a centre for costs it should be a centre for profit. We never had a moment like this in history and I want to be a part of this changing F1. Whatever it takes I will do it, and after that I will see.” added the Renault team director.

As for his retirement, Briatore preferred to keep it under his hat. The only timescale revealed by the Italian was “I hope not to do it for so many years”. He also expressed his enthusiasm about being part of the restructuring of Formula One that started last month and will hopefully not last more than a decade.

“We have talked about costs for a long time, and now finally we are there. We are trying to structure F1 in a different way and I want to be part of it. I hope it does not take 10 years, but we need to take the responsibility to do it as quickly as possible,” concluded Briatore.
