Briatore Asks Red Bull to Pick No 1 Driver

Former F1 boss Flavio Briatore has urged Red Bull Racing to pick a No 1 driver for the championship with 5 races remaining on the calendar. The Italian, who is also Mark Webber's manager, insisted that the Austrian squad can't allow for more points to be waisted in the series by letting its drivers race each other in the remaining rounds of the 2010 campaign.

Red Bull haven't realised yet that if they continue like this, with Webber and Vettel racing against each other, they could lose the championship,” Briatore was quoted as saying to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

In the recent team orders saga in which Ferrari were involved following the German Grand Prix, Briatore stated loud and clear that team tactics should not be banned in the series and that each team should run itself as it pleases. Additionally, he backed Ferrari's strategy for the second part of the season, as they chose to put all efforts behind a single driver, Fernando Alonso.

At Ferrari there is a clear situation with Alonso the team leader and Massa lending his hand. It's not the same with Red Bull, not even with their strategy in the race. They have thrown away a hundred points, Vettel's made all sorts of mistakes. If they don't want to win the championship, this is how to do it,” added the 60-year old.

Heading into the Italian weekend a few days ago, Webber's distance from his teammate Sebastian Vettel was of 28 points. After the Monza race, which the Australian racer ended 2 places down from Vettel, the distance is less than a race win (24 points) leaving both Webber and his much younger teammate with plenty of hopes for the world title, considering there are 5 more race left in the championship.

Before the Monza race, Vettel insisted it would be nonsense for his team to start favoring only one driver for the title, saying “you don't give up trying to win the championship until it's mathematically impossible.”
